This article is on Universities in south Africa with no application fee. Universities in South Africa have gone through a very difficult evolution from the 1950s and even earlier, when most were established during apartheid rule in the country. This led to a majority of black students not being able to attend university, and the trend of gradually allowing non-white students access to higher education has slowly led to the growth of some notable universities as well.
Today’s South African universities are multicultural, inclusive, and varied, from Pretoria to Cape Town. Additionally, they are well regarded on a global scale and have active student communities on campus that include a variety of sports and cultural events.
The vast majority of South African colleges demand that candidates pay a non-refundable fee when submitting their applications. The following three, however, typically do not require application fees (with one exception for the University of Pretoria, but only for families whose incomes are above R150,000 per annum).
The South African universities that don’t charge an application fee are detailed below.
Universities in South Africa With No Application Fee
1. University of Pretoria
For students whose household income is less than or equal to R150,000 annually, there is no application fee.
Pretoria, the country’s capital, is home to the public research university known as the University of Pretoria. It dates back to 1908, when it was founded as the Johannesburg campus of Transvaal University College in Pretoria. For people from low-income families, there is no application fee at the University of Pretoria.
At the University of Pretoria, more than 50,000 students enroll in the business school, one of the university’s nine faculties, or both. The latter was founded in 1949 and boasts the first MBA program outside of North America. It has constantly been rated as the top business school in Africa. Also among the top 50 business schools in the world is the Gordon Institute of Business Science.
In addition, the University of Pretoria is the source of over 16% of all higher education degrees in South Africa, which is more than any other university in the nation. Additionally, its global research output is significant.
Six of the university’s nine faculties have their administrative offices on the main campus, which is located in the town of Hatfield.
2. University of the Free State
No application fee for: all students
The University of the Free State is the next institution on our list of South African universities without an application fee. This public university may be found in Bloemfontein, the country’s Free State’s capital. Since 1950, the Afrikaans language has existed independently, and in 1996, desegregation was complete (after being open to whites only until then). In 2016, the university changed the default language of instruction to English.
UFS openly emphasizes the idea that it values inclusivity, diversity, and transformation.
Starting with undergraduate degrees and incorporating postgraduate studies and short learning courses, you can pursue a variety of specialties here. There are seven faculties to choose from: Business School, Open Distance Learning, Education, Health Sciences, Humanities, Law, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, and Education.
Students can participate in 22 different sports on campus in addition to the university library’s enormous collection of 700,000 books and increasing electronic collection.
3. University of the Western Cape
No application fee for: all students
Another university in South Africa that doesn’t charge an application fee is the University of the Western Cape. It is in Bellville, a suburb of Cape Town. Since its establishment, it has been at the vanguard of the campaign for equal rights in South Africa and the struggle against injustice. The Extension of the University Education Act of 1959, which increased access to higher education for students of color, was a direct cause of the creation of the UWC in 1960. The UWC has always welcomed all races, even though black students were only permitted in a small number of institutions, long before apartheid ended in 1994.
The institution now has a strong emphasis on research and provides a wide range of educational options up to postgraduate degrees. Additionally, it is a part of a vast network of institutions that collaborate internationally, allowing for professorial and student exchanges.
In South Africa and across the continent, the UWC is ranked as the sixth-best institution. For undergraduate or graduate studies, there are faculties in the arts, dentistry, economic and managerial sciences, education, law, and natural sciences.
