People going for masters abroad should understand that admission requirements for a Masters degree abroad can differ from one university to another university based on their requirements and also depends on what you want to study.

But the good news is that there are also many similarities, even though you want to study in China, USA, Germany or anywhere around the world.

Masters program requirement – Diplomas from your previous program

When applying for  Master’s degree in any  university abroad you will be asked to attach certified copies of your previous graduation diplomas, translated in English. Some Master’s applications only require a Bachelor’s diploma, some programs will also required  for a high school graduation diploma.

Universities need these attach documents to know that you attended and graduated from previous cycles of education in order to qualify for a graduate program.

Moreover, these diplomas is usually made up of data about the previous institution you attended before, your Grade Point Average (GPA), final grades.

Admission requirement – Academic Transcripts from your Bachelor’s studies

Academic transcripts provide the university full details about the courses you studied at undergraduate level and the grades you had. Universities request for these transcripts to be in official copies and not screenshots or printed pages.

Transcripts are important because it helps the institution to know what courses you took can help the university to decide if you have the necessary background and skills for the Master’s you are applying to.

It also help them to  know which subjects you performed better and which subjects are “weak spots” you need to improve on. That’s why it is good for you to have higher grades at the undergraduate courses that are mostly needed for the Master’s degree programme you chose.

Proof of language proficiency admission requirement

While you are applying for a degree abroad, alot of chances  that you will study in English or another well known foreign language (German, French, etc.) Is high. Moreover, universities you are applying for need to know that language will not be a barrier in your studies; that you are able to understand and use that language at an academic level.

For universities that are English-taught, there will  require official language certificates, example TOEFL, IELTS, C1 Advanced, etc. When they request for a specific score, it decodes that they really expect you to have that score. The higher the score, the more they will be convinced that you are a master in English skills.

Motivation Letter or Statement of Purpose Admission Requirement for Masters Studies

Many students don’t know the requirement of including a statement of purpose or motivational letter when they are applying. The two, motivation letter and a statement of purpose are very similar, but there don’t mean the same.

However, both documents should be talking about your  background and reasons for applying for a particular degree. It should be clearly structured and well-written, but not very long,it should be formal. Try to limit it to 1-2 pages.

Here is what most universities expect you to include in a motivation letter/statement of purpose;

  • Why you prefer to do that specific program at their university, and how you have learned about the programme.
  • What motivates you about the programme’s content, and why you think it’s the best for you. What factor convinced you to pick that programme (reputation, professors, employment options, etc.)
  • How your previous studies match the Master’s you want to pursue.
  • What career you are aiming for in future after graduation and how it will fit into your plan. there’s a slight difference between a motivational letter and a statement of purpose .

Reference letters Requirement

Reference letters let others speak for you and  will say how they know you. Typically, they are additional evidence of your ability that you will complete the Master’s program successfully.

If asked to submit letters from a professors that knows you, then these letters will focus on your academic skills and achievements. If you are permitted to submit a  letter of reference from an employer, universities expect that letter to reflect the skills related to your Masters. The reference letters will be asked  in advance so that they reach the university on time.

Project Description or Portfolio

Universities will like you to summit a project description when you are applying for a programme that will end with a research thesis. It should consist of;

  • What are you researching for and why
    What is the immediate state of research on that topic.
  • How you are going to conduct your research
    What findings you expect and how your research will contribute to the existent body of knowledge.

Masters Admission Requirement – Curriculum Vitae

The CV is your business card.  Most institutions are not really after much details like you think concerning your work experiences or out of class activities, although you should certainly make them available.

They will want to see how you are experience in the programme or field want to study.

This is why you should concern yourself with putting academic publications, and  paper work in your CV; academic society(s) you belong to etc.
