Eleazar Wheelock, a Yale graduate and Congregational pastor from Columbia, Connecticut, founded Dartmouth in 1769 in response to a request for assistance in establishing a school to train and educate Native Americans as Christian missionaries.

Eleazer’s obvious motivation for establishing such a business stemmed from his friendship with Mohegan Indian Samson Occom. After studying under Wheelock from 1743 to 1747, Occom was ordained and sent to Long Island to preach to the Montauks.

In 1755, Wheelock established Moor’s Indian Charity School. The Charity School was a success in certain ways, but further financing was required to continue operations, so Wheelock sought out the help of friends to gather funds so that the school could be a total success.

John Phillips, who would later build Phillips Exeter Academy, made the first large grant to the school in 1762. In 1766, Occom traveled to England with the Reverend Nathaniel Whitaker to raise funds from churches.

They formed a trust to assist Wheelock with these funds. The trust was led by William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth, a Methodist.
