The University of Giessen, commonly known as the Justus Liebig University of Giessen, is one of Germany’s oldest higher education institutions. Because the all-Hessian Landesuniversität (the adjacent University of Marburg (Philipps-Universität Marburg) in Marburg, Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel)) had become Reformed, it was created in 1607 as a Lutheran university at Giessen, Hesse-Darmstadt (that is, Calvinist). Louis V, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, who gave the university its original name “Ludoviciana,” established his own school of higher education at Giessen, with the primary purpose of insuring the education of pastors as a Lutheran institution.
The university was granted a charter by Rudolf II, Holy Roman Emperor, on May 19, 1607, allowing it to begin education in October of that year. When Hesse-Darmstadt was able to seize the territory around Marburg during the Thirty Years’ War, the university at Giessen stopped to operate and was relocated to its more long-standing location in Marburg (1624/25). The Peace of Westphalia resulted in the rebuilding of the ancient site and, in 1650, the university’s move to Giessen.

UNIVERSITY OF GIESSEN CONTRIBUTION TO NATURAL SCIENCE
The University of Giessen survived the transition from the 18th to the 19th centuries uninjured, remaining the only university in the Grand Duchy of Hesse’s expanded territory. Along with Jena, Giessen served as a model for the politicized Vormärz university, and the “Giessener Schwarzen,” led by Karl Follen and Georg Büchner, epitomized the decade’s revolutionary spirit.
With the Grand Duchy’s appointment of the 21-year-old Justus von Liebig in 1824 — against the university’s wishes and on the advice of Alexander von Humboldt — a new age in natural sciences began, not only in Giessen..
