What You Need to Apply to Veterinary School

For admission, all veterinary schools require 45 to 90 semester hours of undergraduate coursework. 40 to 60 hours seems to be the norm for medical schools.

Veterinary schools have varying requirements, but medical schools just require the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

Approximately 78 percent require the Graduate Registration Exam (GRE), 15% the Veterinary College Entrance Test (VCAT), and 7% the MCAT.

A specified number of hours of work in close contact with animals in a veterinarian or zoological practice, animal or laboratory is required in all veterinary curricula. Before a candidate may qualify, many of them require hundreds of hours of experience.

In human medicine, on the other hand, there is no such requirement, even if it is undeniable and extremely advantageous for applicants to present equivalent credentials.

But here’s the thing: acceptance rates for medical school programs are really high. Only 9% of medical school candidates were accepted in 2010, according to US News and World Report.

So, how does this compare to the percentage of vets who accept your application? In the United States, there are 28 veterinary colleges, and I was able to get acceptance rates for around 10 of them in 2010.

Among them, acceptance rates range from 6.8% to 34.9%, which leaves me with the impression that the admission rate is, on average, higher (and less competitive) for veterinary programs than for informing medical programs.
